Immigration & The Border
Immigration is a bedrock of the American dream. Instead of seeking out policy solutions, the discussion around immigration has disintegrated into racism and xenophobia by extremists such as my opponent, Nancy Mace.
Immigration is a bedrock of the American dream. Instead of seeking out policy solutions, the discussion around immigration has disintegrated into racism and xenophobia by extremists such as my opponent, Nancy Mace. While my opponent has been fearmongering about immigrants, I have visited both sides of our southern border and spoken with immigrants in our district about what policies could best represent them.Â
The majority of unauthorized immigrants in South Carolina have been here longer than 10 years, building families and paying into our financial systems such as social security and state income taxes. As your congressman, I will work tirelessly to find solutions that benefit immigrants in the Lowcountry, while also supporting policies that strengthen our capabilities along the southern U.S. border.
South Carolina has a population of around 260,000 immigrants of varying statuses who are integral to our economy and culture. Ensuring that they are respected as people and protected from those seeking to exploit them is crucial to my campaign.Â
For immigrants in the Lowcountry, I am prepared to support legislation such as:
The American Dream and Promise ActÂ
The Dignity Act
The Emergency National Security Supplemental Appropriations Act
Unlike Nancy Mace, who has taken advantage of misinformation surrounding immigration, I am prepared to tackle this issue in a civil and bipartisan manner. Let’s get back to common-sense, humane solutions that empower our immigrant communities and protect U.S. interests.
